44 MW InnoVent Diaz Wind Farm A Milestone for Renewable Energy in Namibia

The InnoVent Diaz Wind Farm, located near the harbour town of Lüderitz in southern Namibia, represents a significant step forward in the country’s renewable energy transition.

With a total capacity of 44 megawatts (MW), the wind farm will consist of 11 turbines, delivering an expected annual production of over 230 GWh of clean electricity.  This will represent 6% of Namibia’s electricity demand, and 13% of the country’s generation, ensuring a significant reduction of the electricity imports while avoiding the emission of approximately 200,000 tons of CO2 per year!

Supporting Namibia’s National Energy Plan

Diaz project forms part of Namibia’s National Integrated Resource Plan (NIRP), which prioritises the development of renewable energy sources to reduce reliance on imports and fossil fuels. By utilising the abundant wind resources of the Lüderitz region, the wind farm will contribute to enhancing the country’s energy independence and sustainability.

Progress on Construction and Logistics

On-site, the construction is progressing at full speed. Civil engineering works, including road construction, platform preparation, and foundation work, are well underway.

A significant milestone was achieved on 9 January 2025, with the departure of wind turbine components from Lusi Port in China. This shipment, expected to arrive in Namibia within 45 days, includes the blades, hubs, rotors, and nacelles. Once delivered, assembly of the turbines will commence, marking a pivotal stage in the project.

Local Impact and Job Creation

The Diaz Wind Farm is not only a project of national importance for Namibia’s energy strategy, but also a driver of local economic development. The construction phase has created numerous jobs for local workers and engaged Namibian companies to supply materials and services.

The project exemplifies how renewable energy can have a direct positive impact on the economy, fostering skills development and providing opportunities for local businesses.

A Vision for Namibia’s Renewable Energy Future

The Diaz Wind Farm underscores InnoVent’s commitment to advancing renewable energy in Africa, while supporting Namibia’s environmental and economic goals. It is the largest and 7th investment of InnoSun’s mother company in the country, totalling 75MW for a total capital expenditure of N$2.5 billion.

The project will play a key role in diversifying the country’s energy mix, reducing emissions, and ensuring a sustainable future.

With the arrival of turbine components expected in February 2025, the Diaz project is on track to achieve its ambitious goals, setting a new benchmark for wind energy development in Namibia.
