Localising Green Industries in Namibia

A study on “Localising Green Industries in Namibia” has been launched alongside the Green Industrialisation Blueprint.

The study’s outcomes and recommendations were discussed with key stakeholders from both government and private sector during the Global African Hydrogen Summit (GAH2S) held in Windhoek in September.

Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga, and State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Jochen Flasbarth, officially launched the study and the blueprint, in the presence of the Deputy Executive Director of the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade, Michael Humavindu, and Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe.

The study, which was conducted in collaboration with various government ministries and the GIZ Green Hydrogen Business Alliance Project, outlines actionable steps for green industrialisation in Namibia, focusing on key industries such as iron, lithium, and rare earth elements.

The study’s recommendations emphasise leveraging Namibia’s mining sector and creating a supportive legislative framework to unlock green industry potential.

Shilunga highlighted the importance of building on the mining industry to produce globally demanded green materials, while Mnyupe noted opportunities for local lithium processing and green iron production.

The study and Blueprint’s findings are expected to guide future green hydrogen projects and shape Namibia’s green industrialisation strategy.
