EU Energy Boss on Familiarisation Visit to Erongo Hydrogen Projects

European Union (EU) Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, who was in Namibia to attend the Global African Hydrogen Summit (GAH2S), took time to get a first-hand account of the hydrogen projects in the Erongo Region.

Accompanied by Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe, Simson visited Cleanergy Solutions near Walvis Bay, HyIron near Arandis, HDF Energy near Swakopmund, and the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport). These entities are pioneering Namibia’s green hydrogen ambitions, with the aim to be a leading producer and exporter of clean energy to Europe and other global markets.

This visit came soon after the European partners signed funding initiatives amounting to more than N$700 million earmarked for the development of Namibia’s entire hydrogen value chain. This includes the production and transport of hydrogen, as well as the integration of local industries, job creation, and sustainability.

The delegation also visited Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s green hydrogen production hub near Dune 7. This facility includes a refuelling station and a training centre.

“The centre will ensure Namibia builds a skilled workforce to support this new industry,” said Mnyupe, adding that the centre is expected to serve as a key element in building local expertise and ensuring that the benefits of green hydrogen extend throughout the Namibian economy.

HDF Energy’s Renewstable Swakopmund (RSWK) project, demonstrated the integration of hydrogen production, storage, and distribution. With a N$4.5 billion investment, this project aims to provide consistent, clean energy for Namibia. Off-take agreements with NamPower are underway.

At Namport preparations are under way for construction of a bulk ammonia terminal set to begin in early 2025.

Namport executive engineer Elzevir Gelderbloem said the authority has been in discussions with European port authorities, including the Port of Rotterdam, to form green corridors to Europe.
