{"id":1078,"date":"2026-07-28T11:55:01","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T11:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/etangonam.com\/?p=1078"},"modified":"2026-07-28T11:55:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T11:55:01","slug":"erongo-red-moves-to-develop-20mw-solar-power-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/etangonam.com\/?p=1078","title":{"rendered":"Erongo RED Moves to Develop 20MW Solar Power Plant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor Company (Erongo RED) is advancing plans to develop a 20 megawatt solar generation plant at a cost of approximately N$470 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solar plant is envisaged to increase local electricity generation, reduce dependence on imported power and strengthen energy security in one of Namibia\u2019s key economic regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cErongo RED continues to expand its off-grid and solar energy solutions and has strengthened partnerships to improve electricity access in underserved communities,\u201d said Erongo Governor Natalia \/Goagoses in her state of the region address delivered on 17 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\/Goagoses revealed that the regional electricity distributor had distributor had invested close to N$800 million in electricity infrastructure over the past decade as it expands network capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said Erongo RED has allocated a further N$152 million for electricity network expansion during the 2025\/26 financial year, with projects planned for Swakopmund, Arandis, Karibib and Uis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Projects worth N$81 million have already been completed, improving electricity access for thousands of households while strengthening the reliability of supply in peri-urban and rural communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI direct the shareholders (of Erongo RED) to ensure an equitable distribution of resources across all constituencies. For example, rural electrification remains a concern in the most remote parts of the region,\u201d said the Governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Erongo region\u2019s combined urban and rural electrification rate currently stands at about 79%, with urban electrification estimated at around 82%. Walvis Bay remains one of the region\u2019s best-performing areas, with electrification levels of about 98%, while other towns continue to record gradual improvements through ongoing network expansion and infrastructure upgrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erongo RED Chief Executive Officer Immanuel !Hanabeb has been on record as saying the entity was exploring opportunities to diversify its energy mix by investing in solar electricity generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have completed a business case study and soon will go on a tender to appoint an Independent Power Producer (IPP) who can sell electricity to us at a cheaper tariff.
