Sorexa Solar Power Plant Phase I Commissioned

While Namibia’s  first solar park at Omburu, outside Omaruru, celebrated its 10th anniversary on 15 May 2025, InnoSun  commissioned its fifth solar power plant in the country on 18 August with the completion of the first phase of the Sorexa solar plant.

The Sorexa plant, located at the Trekkopje mine site just north-east of Arandis, in the Erongo region, is being developed under the name of Sorexa Sun Energy (Pty) Ltd, an entity owned 100% by InnoSun Energy Holding. It will be built in several phases. The solar farm is expected to reach a maximum capacity of 49 megawatt peak (MWp) within three years.

The first phase which was commissioned in August has a capacity of 9.8 MWp. More than 14,000 photovoltaic panels have been installed at the Sorexa plant.

The electricity generated from the solar plant will be sold directly to nearby businesses through power purchase agreements (PPAs), using the Modified Single Buyer (MSB) model. Orano Mining Namibia has already signed a PPA with Sorexa Sun Energy (Pty) Ltd to directly purchase 6 MW produced by the solar plant. The solar power will be used to run the Erongo Desalination Plant (EDP).

The initiative is expected to enable Orano to make the provision of water to the Erongo region, from a green electricity source, more affordable in the long-term, and contribute greatly to efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the EDP. The Sorexa Sun Energy plant becomes the first large scale PV plant in Namibia to supply energy to a desalination plant. And it will represent a reduction of circa 10 000 tons of CO2 equivalent, amounting to 30% of the desalination plant’s current annual greenhouse gas emissions.
